Heidi, over are Foodies Are Fun, is putting together a series she is going to call “Foodie Follies.” This series is going to feature the hilarious stories we all encounter in the kitchen and that only a few of us share with the world (despite the embarrassment). Hello Foodies Are Fun readers! My name is Rocío and I blog over at Apicius’ Apprentice about learning my way around the kitchen. I am no stranger to cooking catastrophes, so when Heidi asked me if I had a story I could share, I immediately thought: “hmmmm… which one?”
To give you a sense of my cooking abilities, my first attempt in the kitchen involved a packet of Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Muffins. It was one of those just-add-an-egg and milk kinds of packets. I set out to make an afternoon treat for the family but when I pulled the muffin pan out of the oven, I could tell something went terribly wrong. The muffins had not risen, they were very dark (close to burnt), and were like little rocks. It turned out I had forgotten to add the milk… yeah… one of only two ingredients I had to remember… genius, no? I was in eighth grade at the time, but it pretty much set the tone for this culinary adventure I have been on ever since.

Happy Monday my friends! Before you start grumbling under your breath about there being no such thing as a happy Monday, prepare yourself. Grab a cup of coffee and spend the next few minutes at work (or at home) in the sweetest form of escapism that exists. For the next few minutes, I invite you to dive into the sweet and delicious compilation of treats that have been gathered on two wonderful sites.
The first party is taking place over at Steph’s Bite by Bite blog. At 7am this morning, the auction opened for bidding on all of the baked goods that were donated for Steph’s bake sale. Her Team in Training is working to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It is such an important cause and one that is very dear to me. Please run (not walk!) yourself over to her site and consider bidding on those delicious treats!
The second party is being hosted by Nancy over at Spicie Foodie. The Your Best Recipe roundup is a collection of dishes that participating bloggers have contributed. Each month, we get to pick our favorite dish that we made and share it with the awesome community of readers on her blog.
Come on, isn’t this a great way to start a new week? You get to contribute to a great cause and drool over a collection of delicious recipes! Can us food blog readers ask for more on a Monday morning? I think not!
The last thing I wanted to share with you is my *happy dance*! On Saturday afternoon, I received in the mail a treat that I had been hoping for ever since she announced it’s release. It’s Nancy’s cookbook! I can’t wait to try the different recipes and drool over the phenomenal photography on each page.
We drove home yesterday to celebrate Epiphany (a much celebrated holiday in Spain, celebrated on January 6th) with my family. Mama made a feast of tapas recipes and we exchanged gifts and enjoyed each other’s company. We’re still home, so I’m not able to go into detail about the different dishes she made but be prepared because next Friday, I will be featuring mama’s spanish tortilla recipe on the site!

Next weekend, the decorations will come down and the holiday season will officially come to a close in our homes. This means the collection, wrapping, and storing of mama’s many belénes (or nativity scenes) that are displayed in every corner of the house. Years ago when we all lived at home, we would often entertain ourselves by going around and counting the collection. At one point I remember my sister stating that there were 34 belénes on display. I didn’t make a concerted effort to capture all of them, but I did take some pictures of the ones around the dining room, kitchen, and living room.
I hope everybody’s holiday season has wrapped up beautifully. It’s back to the grind (and normal life) come Monday and I promise to return to a regular posting schedule. I have missed you all and look forward to catching up on your sites!
I’m thinking of starting a tab where I can list my new cookbooks. The coolest thing about this blog adventure (so far) has been how excited my loved ones have gotten. Mom sent a stack of books (picture 1), I bought a few online that I have been testing out (picture 2), and my sweet friends made a collection of recipes for my birthday (not pictured).
The post-it notes indicate recipes I want to try…and yes… they are color coded!
It’s finals week on my end, so I’m afraid I must bid you adieu. The class that inspired this wonderful blog is demanding that an epic research paper be turned in by Monday. I have almost everything lined up to begin writing except one interview that will take place tomorrow morning.
